Defeated But Not Down

August 4, 2011- Game 2 of the first round of this tournament. And boy was I hyped up for this game. Maybe a little bit too much. But for a good reason, as we were to face off against the Navy team. Watching them play the earlier, I recognized they were a tough team, both mentally and physically, and one of the top teams in this league. We definitely needed to bring our A game and then some. Unfortunately on this day we did not and we paid for it. The Navy defeated us 3-0.

Equipped with a balanced offense, aggressive serving, and defense, the Navy probably out played us in every category. The Lady Stags would battle for points but it seemed like we were fighting an uphill battle the whole time. Long rallies went their way, calls went their way. Even when we were ahead in the game, it felt like we were still losing. The crowd definitely seemed like they were pulling more for the Navy as they should. I even had some hecklers yelling at me, " Ford! Go home." I thought that was hilarious. There was even some booing when I went to serve. Sorry guys its gonna take a lot more than that to distract me. I was in a zone. Plus it got me even more motivated to bust the cover off the ball. Wish I did.

One of the things that I think killed our chances was our reception. Set 2 was impossible, which is why they beat us 25-13. Much credit to that one server that killed us. But it just shows the importance of ball control in volleyball. That's why on the first day of volleyball camp we learn to pass, not hit. Cant have one without the other.

Injury could be another excuse. With the loss of our starting libero, Jen Salgado, we definitely had a void that needed to be filled. Not just with her ability, but her leadership in the back row. With Jen out for at least 2 weeks, we have had two very capable liberos step in, Mae Crisostomo and MJ Pepito. What they lack in experience, they make up for with hard work.

Joining the injured reserve list for a quasi- second was out opposite Jil Gustillo. But she is fine now. :)

We will see this team again and hopefully next time we can compete at a higher level. A level that the SSC Lady Stags are very much capable of.

And Always Bravo Baste!
